United Way of Montgomery, Radford & Floyd’s community building efforts are focused on generating and providing our community with resources to build support for local human needs.

This includes providing funding to thirty-one health and human service charities in the New River Valley (click on "Community Partners above for a full listing); assisting with other community initiatives that impact health and human services in the NRV; coordinating Federal Emergency Management food and shelter funding to partner agencies; coordinating Gifts-In-Kind donations for non-profits in the area; providing technical support to partner agencies; and handling information and referral calls for residents looking for help, information and volunteer opportunities.

Our local United Way's focus areas:

  • Providing access to physical and mental health care
  • Assisting children and families in crisis
  • Meeting basic emergency needs
  • Helping local youth develop for successful futures
  • Empowering disabled children & adults
  • Providing emergency care & training.

UWMRF also recently implemented a new online volunteer-matching and donation-matching database called Volunteer Solutions that can help connect NRV residents looking to help or looking for help. Volunteer Solutions enables individuals to post profiles, listing the types of volunteer projects they would like. And the program allows organizations to post projects that they need help for. Ditto for items that organizations need to have donated, or that buisnesses have to donate.

Click on the "Volunteer Solutions" link at the top of the page to check it out!

Top 7 Reasons to Invest in our local communitythrough UWMRF

7. Your gift stays in this community
Gifts to our United Way are invested in six impact areas among thirty-one LOCAL health & human service agencies & programs. Your donation stays in this community unless you specifically designate it to go elsewhere.

6. Your United Way is an independent, local organization
United Way of Montgomery, Radford & Floyd (UWMRF), your local United Way, is a non- profit organization governed by people from our community who volunteer to serve on the Board of Directors, Resource Development Team, Community Investment Team and other teams.

5. It’s easy to give to your local United Way
United Way is the only local charity to whom you can donate through payroll deduction. Our local United Way also offers credit card giving - gifts can be made on a bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, or other schedule of your choosing.

4. Your local United Way is more than a fundraiser
Besides providing financial support to local health and human service programs, UWMRF provides community support in many ways – just read the information to the left to find out how we serve the local community.

3. Your local United Way is efficient and innovative
So your gift has the greatest impact, we continuously explore alternatives and seek new ways to solve problems in the New River Valley. UWMRF puts your money where you intend it to go by keeping our overhead (management & fundraising expenses) low at 15.7%. The national acceptable standard for charity overhead is 35%.

2. Our Community needs your help
The natural beauty & prosperity of the NRV often masks the real needs in our community. 19% of residents in the NRV live at or below the poverty line ($20,650 a year for a family of four). Approximately 20% of NRV residents are without health insurance. Each year, about 3,000 local women and children will seek support from domestic and/or sexual violence. And an estimated 20% of people in our area are unable to read at a fourth-grade level - they can’t read a
prescription bottle or a road map.
