When the Virginia Tech Men’s basketball team took on Wake Forest, a group of special fans in section 7 could be heard cheering extra loud. United Way Kid’s Day’s 14th consecutive event took place this year on Saturday, March 4th, at Cassell Coliseum, thanks to Virginia Tech Athletics and founding event sponsor, Bill Roth.
In addition to free admission to the game, every child and chaperone attending the event received vouchers for a hot dog, popcorn, a soda, and a milkshake. They also received a special t-shirt, sunglasses, and a wristband to commemorate the day, as well as a post-game picture with the Hokie Bird. It was truly the VIP experience!
“We are grateful for Virginia Tech Athletics and Bill Roth for their work to make this event possible again, for the 14th consecutive year! This special event has grown to be such an inspirational and memorable moment for many children who have never set foot on Virginia Tech’s campus. It is truly a wonderful community collaboration, and is always a delight to see the kids really enjoying themselves throughout the game.” concluded Marcela Jara, who is the Programs Coordinator at United Way and facilitated the event.
Participating programs included; Boys and Girls Club, Boy Scouts (Blue Ridge Mountain Council), Intellectual Disabilities Agency, New River Family Shelter, Toys from the Heart, Women’s Resource Center, and Elves United.
