There are some big changes happening at your local United Way! The United Way of Montgomery, Radford and Floyd will now officially be known as the United Way of the New River Valley, to better reflect the service area and the agencies that it serves.
In addition, United Way is relaunching VolunteerNRV.org, their online volunteer center that connects interested individuals with local volunteer opportunities. United Way has hosted this site for the last five years, but has recently changed to a new and much more user-friendly platform. Community members and nonprofits alike are encouraged to check out the new and improved site. Users can create a profile, track their volunteer hours, follow their favorite local nonprofits and their events, and receive notifications when new opportunities matching their skills and interests are posted. Simply go online to www.VolunteerNRV.org to sign up!
In addition to the name change and the re-launch of VolunteerNRV.org, United Way is also becoming a Diaper Bank that will be open to income-qualified families on Tuesday’s and Friday’s beginning in February. United Way’s Programs Manager, Marcela Jara, had this to say about the Diaper Bank, “Throughout the years we’ve seen and heard the difficulty that many of our clients struggle with to afford new diapers for their children. Many of them receive WIC and SNAP benefits which are wonderful for them however diapers are not an eligible assistance with either governmental program. We’ve established the United Way Diaper Bank to keep local babies healthy and happy by providing access to diapers for families in need and promoting partner programs to improve health and self- sufficiency.”
To celebrate these changes, the Montgomery, Radford, and Floyd Chambers will be hosting a joint ribbon cutting at the United Way Office, 111 W. Main St Christiansburg, on Tuesday, January 30th at 12pm. United Way looks forward to continuing to serve the New River Valley community with this new name and new programs in 2018 and beyond!
