Local organizations serving the New River Valley may make application if the following criteria are/can be met:

1.) Organizations must possess IRS 501(c)3 status or have an organization that has 501(c)3 as their fiscal agent.

2.) The character of services to be provided must provide community healing and/or recovery in response to the Virginia Tech event of April 16, 2007. Services must either be new or directly increased in response to this specific event.  Organizations/programs awarded funds will be expected to submit progress reports at 6 months and 12 months regarding their use of UICF funding. Community recovery and/or healing grants will be awarded to local organizations/programs for services to the community yet to be provided in response to the April 16 event.  The organization may not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or status as a Vietnam Era, special disabled, other covered, or newly separated veteran, or any other status or condition protected by applicable federal, state or local law. (Awarded grants will be subject to review/audit by the UICF committee to assure grant funds are being/have been expended in alignment with the purpose of the award.)

3.) Providing new or increased services directed towards:

            • Mental health counseling or services
            • Children’s programs to address school violence
            • Community forums to address concerns/solutions to violence
            • Long-term recovery needs, not addressed elsewhere

Organizations/programs applying for United In Caring Fund (UICF) grants will be required to submit the following for committee review for each proposal:

Make sure the following items of information are addressed in the proposal:

- What individuals or groups will be targeted for receiving services (client descriptions)?

- What services will be provided to individual clients/groups and how often (times per week, month, et.) will individual clients/groups be served?

- Additionally, how many clients in total are anticipated to be served by the proposed service/program: per month, year, etc.?

- What is the expected duration for the provision of services with the grant award: i.e. 1 year? 2 years? 5 years? etc.

- How will clients be identified (referred) to the proposed organization/program for services?

- How will your organization collaborate with other agencies providing related services to make sure services are not duplicated?

- Will you provide these services with existing staff or will additional staff be added? (please describe in some detail)

- If applicable, what are the credentials of the staff that will provide these services.

- What other sources of revenue have you identified to help the organization/program pay for these services?

The United In Caring Fund is accepting proposals for one-year grants of up to $25,000 for eligible organizations/programs at this time.  Funds are limited; therefore applicants are asked to be mindful of this and apply in a cooperative spirit, not applying for more than is necessary.  An organization may submit more than one grant proposal.  Grants will be awarded on a competitive basis by the UICF committee. The UICF Committee reserves the right to provide partial awards and/or otherwise work with agencies and organizations to achieve optimal funding results. The UICF Committee is the volunteer committee representing the concerns of the affected community that oversees the fund and addresses other community disaster recovery concerns related to the 4/16/07 event.  The deadline for receiving proposals is August 24, 2007.  Incomplete proposals cannot be accepted.

Call 540-381-2066 and ask for Kymn Davidson-Hamley if there are any questions.

Submit two copies of the complete proposal and attachments to:
