United in Caring Fund, Tragedy at Virginia Tech (4/16/07) Information

"Our thoughts remain with the victims, their loved ones and everyone affected by the Virginia Tech tragedy. After such unimaginable loss, what matters is the healing. United Way is here for the victims, their loved ones and the entire community. We will be here for the long-term to support the whole community's recovery." - Kymn Davidson-Hamley, Executive Director, United Way of MRF

(Click here for resources regarding dealing with grief and trauma)

United Way launched the United In Caring Fund the day after the tragedy. Specifically, the Fund will be used to:

1.) Support community-wide recovery through programs like mental health support services and children’s programs to address school violence.

(For Community Recovery Grant Criteria, please click here...Community Recovery Grant Criteria.)

(For information regarding possible needs in the community following the tragedy, please click here... Community healing needs - a case statement

2.) Fulfill unmet needs of the victims and their families, such as immediate unmet emergency needs, medical and other transportation costs, and mental health services.

United Way has activated a volunteer committee of community leaders from the town of Blacksburg, the Ministerial Association, the Virginia Tech Administration, the Montgomery Co. Commonwealth Attorney’s office, American Red Cross, Mental Health Association and United Way.  The committee also includes two Virginia Tech students.  The committee will meet regularly to review applications and develop strategies to address the long-term needs of the victims, their loved ones and our community. Gary Schroeder, Lead Pastor for Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in Blacksburg, and Dixon Hanna, Vice Provost of Outreach for Virginia Tech and past UWMRF Board of Directors President, chair the committee.
