Jessica found herself homeless after spending time in jail and staying with family for a short time. When staying with family fell through, her probation officer told her about To Our House. For eight seasons, To Our House (TOH) had served single homeless men.

Mark and David's Stories

This is a story about two boys. Both were placed in the same foster care home at only seven weeks old because of abuse and neglect. One received the services of NRV CARES, an organization dedicated to protecting children and strengthening families, while the other boy did not.

Ben's Story

Meet Ben. Ben stopped attending high school to go to work. But now he realizes that having a GED will help him build his skills and resume for better employment. Ben felt very anxious about attending GED classes. He had a lot of anxiety about classroom experiences and felt insecure about his skills. He worked with an LVNRV tutor to prepare for the GED.

In 2017 we were contacted by a woman living in Christiansburg who was needing transportation to the Pulaski Cancer Center daily, Monday through Friday for eight weeks. Her eligibility was based on her economic status, her inability to work due to her health and waiting to be approved for Medicaid. She had no vehicle of her own and no other options for transportation.

Tammy and Emily's Story

A Women’s Resource Center (WRC) emergency advocate met a family at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center. The advocate met Emily, a 7-year-old girl, and her Mom, Tammy. Emily lives with her Mom and spends alternating weekends with her dad, Jeff, who has joint custody. Tammy brought Emily to the hospital following a weekend visit with her Dad.

Emma's Story

Emma called NRV CARES to enroll in Parenting Young Children however was worried about sharing her story with a group of people. Staff further explained that any and all participants are welcome and no background information is required. Emma arrived the first night emotionally guarded, scared, and quiet. The next week, she seemed more relaxed, but guarded. Slowly, she opened up.

Richard's Story

StoryRichard approached the NRCA Montgomery County Emergency Assistance Program in Christiansburg in October of last year. He was living in his car after his recent release from prison and had no family or friends in the area to help him with a place to stay. The MCEAP worker scheduled Richard for an intake interview with the Homeless and Housing Program’s Rapid Rehousing Counselor.
