Troop 158 of Blacksburg Virginia, was recognized by National Public Radio in 2018 with a storyabout girls joining the Boy Scouts of America. Troop 158 was one of the 15 units in the Blue Ridge Mountains Council to register as an early adopter of the new program allowing girls to register in the Cub Scout BSA program for elementary age youth. In February of 2019, this group was the first to register for the Scouts BSA program as their group transitioned up to the next level of Scouting. Nationally girls were allowed to join the traditionally all-male program in February of 2019. While there have been many great stories from this transition, one of the most impactful was from a girl whose brother had been registered in the Cub Scout program for 4 years who said,”Now I can get the same recognition for doing the same activities that I have been doing with my brother since he joined Pack 158.”
