Meet Sophia, her life was changed through Med-Ride’s transportation assistance. Med-Ride provides transportation for low-income, uninsured and underinsured residents of the New River Valley who have no other means of transportation. Med-Ride graciously helps people in these situations. The following story is just one of many in which Med-Ride has made a difference in the lives of individuals in the NRV.
In 2018, Med-Ride was contacted by a family from Christiansburg who needed wheelchair transportation for their family's 94-year-old matriarch. The elderly woman was living in a nursing home in Radford. The family called the Med-Ride Program arranging transportation options for their loved one. They wanted to spend time with their loved one and share a family meal over Christmas weekend. The family had no way to transport her nor the economic means for the fee charged by ambulance services. The family felt that their loved one, who was their grandmother, mother, and wife, would experience great mental health benefits by attending their family dinner. A Med-Ride Volunteer who owns and drives a wheelchair accessible vehicle was assigned and accepted the transportation request. When arriving at the family's home, the husband of the client recognized the Med-Ride volunteer as someone he had previously known. The family invited the volunteer to join them as they shared their meal with the matriarch of their family.
The granddaughter of the client called the following Monday to express the family’s appreciation of having this special dinner with their mother, grandmother, and wife. As the grandmother waited for the volunteer to pick them up at the nursing home, she looked up at her granddaughter and said with tears in her eyes, "I have been waiting for this day since last summer." Although this was for a non-emergency medical appointment, it was a transport that provided so much more. It created memories for this family, the volunteer, and for this lady who longed to be close with her family.
