United Way Celebrates 2014 Volunteers & Supporters

On Thursday, June 25th the United Way of Montgomery, Radford and Floyd recognized local businesses, individual donors, and volunteers who supported the organization throughout the 2014-2015 campaign. A celebratory lunch was held for 90 attendees, hosted by Warm Hearth Village in Blacksburg.

Guests enjoyed hearing from retiring Executive Director of NRV CARES, Bev Walters. Walters spoke about her career journey from working in a laboratory to becoming a child advocate. She tearfully looked back upon her last 10 years as director, expressing the importance of individuals getting involved and seeking their passion. Walters also shared the overwhelming reality when it comes to child abuse in the New River Valley. Our community is ranked one of the highest in child abuse and neglect cases in Virginia, with Giles County ranked 2nd highest in the state, and Pulaski County 5th. Thankfully, NRV CARES and United Way supported organizations are working to protect children and strengthen families each day in our community.

United Way Executive Director Kymn Davidson-Hamley concluded, “It has been a hard year. We have lost valuable companies that had supported our work for many years and one of our partner organizations closed its doors due to lack of funding. But, today we have come together to celebrate our successes and encourage each other to keep up the hard work. We live in a wonderful community and our supporters understand the challenges we face and are working together to combat those issues. We have so much to be thankful for this year! More companies are getting involved with United Way and helping our local community, more volunteers are joining hands to help our neighbors, and more organizations are growing and reaching more people who need help.”

Over 40 companies and individuals were recognized for their support in the 2014-2015 United Way campaign. Each of the award winners received a plaque for their efforts to build community resources for local needs. The following companies and individuals received awards for their achievements:
